Update ‘Other Charges”, including SAF Contribution

SustainabilityNov - 27, 2024
Effective 1 January 2025, we will update our “Other Charges” for cargo shipments. The adjustments reflect evolving market conditions, including increased operational costs and regulatory requirements. A full overview of all the changes can be viewed via myCargo.

While detailed information can be accessed online, we would like to provide more context regarding the introduction of a new SAF* contribution charge.

Effective 1 January 2025, European regulations** will require aviation fuel suppliers to include a portion of SAF in deliveries to European airports with 2% for all flights departing from the EU. As a result, we will introduce an SAF contribution under the “Other Charges” code MU for all shipments with flight legs departing from EU airports to intercontinental destinations.

Our customers can start or continue to voluntarily invest in the purchase of additional SAF when booking their shipment in myCargo (via goSAF) or through our Cargo SAF Programme.

* SAF stands for “sustainable aviation fuel”, the term used by the aviation industry to describe the alternative to fossil-based kerosene.
** These regulations ensure that SAF produced and consumed in the European Union reduce CO2 emissions by at least 65% over its lifecycle compared to fossil-based kerosene. SAF is also required to meet strict environmental criteria, specifically guaranteeing that its production does not compete with human or animal food supplies and does not lead to deforestation. Air France KLM Martinair Cargo applies these same criteria outside Europe, relying on certification from recognised international organisations the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC).
