Responsibilities

Shipper Booking approval Ensure your tracking device is approved by Air France KLM Martinair Cargo before booking your shipment. If you have any questions about our approval procedure or would like to submit a request for device approval, please contact us.	Forwarder Booking details When making your flight booking, provide the type, model, and serial number of the tracking device along with the IATA Special Handling code EMD.	Carrier Shipment acceptance Upon acceptance of the shipment, verify the presence of the Electronic Monitoring Device (EMD) code under Handling Information. Cross-check the device model information against the list of approved devices.
Providing information Provide detailed information on the tracking device used with your shipment. Specify their serial numbers and location within the shipment.	AWB declaration Declare the tracking device information in the Air Waybill (AWB) under Handling Information or in the designated field in the Freight Waybill (FWB). You should mention the good and safe condition of your device, and that its placement within the shipment conforms to provider´s instructions.

List of approved active containers with tracking device

Dataloggers

Tracking devices that are not able to sent wireless data (also referred to as dataloggers) do not need approval on Air France KLM Cargo. However, IATA DG ruling must be applied in case Lithium batteries are being used. In addition the conditions for the use of tracking devices apply (especially condition 9, see link below).

(Wireless data are data send by wifi, Bluetooth, NFC, NB-LTE, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G or any other wireless technique).

Which tracker am I allowed to use?

Passive trackers are allowed on all our flights. However, active trackers transmitting data wirelessly (including via WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, NB-LTE, 2G, 3G, 4G, and more) must comply with regulations to avoid interfering with aircraft systems and ensure flight safety. Only approved active trackers which have passed our safety screening are considered safe for transportation. Find the list of our approved active trackers here.

Are 5G active trackers allowed for use?

All 5G trackers are currently strictly forbidden on AF-KL-MP flights.

Which countries are subject to further restrictions?

We do not allow active tracking devices on flights to the following countries: North Korea, Iran, Syria, Sudan and Cuba. This means we do not accept any active tracking devices on flights to Havana (Cuba) & Khartoum (Sudan).

Why do I need to declare my approved active tracker?

Declaring your approved active tracker ensures that it meets all regulatory standards and is approved for use on our flights.

How long does it take to declare the use of an approved active tracker via the AWB?

The declaration process is quick and easy, taking just a few minutes to complete. Find an example of compliant AWB registration here.

What happens if I don't declare my approved active tracker?

If your active tracker is not declared, it may not be approved for use on our flights, leading to delays, extra costs or other issues such as being blacklisted.

What happens if I use an active tracker which is not approved?

Using active tracking devices that are not approved is considered a flight safety risk. This action may be reported to relevant authorities. Moreover, this action can lead to shipment acceptance refusal by the Airline and return of the shipment to the forwarder (at the forwarder's expense if costs are incurred in this operation).

Can I apply for the approval of an active tracker which is not yet on the approved list?

Yes, you can submit a request to get a device approved. This is followed up by research and testing, a process taking a minimum of 8-12 weeks. To send a request, contact us. However, note that we do recommend choosing an active tracker which has already been approved by us, as it will save you a lot of time.

Are regulations the same across carriers?

Devices approved may differ between carriers. For flights performed by Delta Airlines, an approved list can be found on their website.
